Who knows how to samba?

August 22nd, 2010

Don your sequined bikinis and feathered headdresses, because we’re celebrating Ana’s American citizenship with a Brazilian bbq! Now Ana claims that she’s never been to Carnaval, but if we get enough cachaça in her, I’m sure we can find out the truth.

Ana is bringing rice and beans and I’ll either be doing beef or pork — I haven’t decided yet.

RSVP in the comments section — we hope to see you Wednesday.

Vive la France

August 15th, 2010

Fortunately my high school French did not let me down — we’ll be grilling French on Wednesday. I’ll be making steak au poivre and stuffed portabella mushrooms and probably some grilled asparagus.

RSVP in the comments — bring anything French or almost French (les Tostidos?)

Berets or Carnaval?

August 14th, 2010

So there are two weeks of BBQ left, and one will be French the other Brazilian. Ana used to be a Brazilian, so that night is for her, and Tori requested a French night. Obviously, I want to make sure each could make it to their night. Soooo, Tori and Ana, tell me which nights you think you can make it.

The Land of the Morning Calm

August 1st, 2010

A wise man once said that any event that ends with a topless dance party is a successful event. That said, India night was a success! I’d give more details, but you know what they say, “What happens at the Global BBQ stays at the Global BBQ.”
This week we’ll be traveling north east to Korea. I’ll be making Bulgogi with both beef and seitan. I found some vegan kimchi (which is good, because all the recipes I found were going to make A LOT!) and an interesting aloe vera soft drink.
If you’re looking for food ideas, there’s a big Asian super market on Washtenaw in Ypsi. I saw Korean musk melon ice pops there the other day. I hope you can make it — RSVP in the comments section.
P.S. Next week is canceled because it’s our anniversary. That leaves two weeks left, one being French and the other Brazilian.

This week…

July 25th, 2010

After an especially carnivorous week eating Argentinian food, we’ll be eating the food from a culture who likes cows even more than South Americans. So much so, they feel it’s sacred. For the first time, we’ll be eating Asian food, and Indian food is one of my favorites. I’ll be grilling naan, paneer kabobs, and maybe chicken tikka. RSVP in the comments section and we hope to see you Wednesday.

Next week…

July 15th, 2010

So paella worked out pretty well on the grill. I’ll be making it again (if for no other reason than to justify the paella pan I bought).
To honor their historic vote that makes them the first nation in South America to legalize gay marriage, we’ll be grilling Argentinian style next week. They have a pretty rich bbq history. Expect some kind of beef and something vegetarian. We’re going out of town for the weekend, so it’ll be a bit of a surprise next week. I hope to see you here.

Spain: World Cup Champs

July 12th, 2010

And THAT is why Americans don’t like professional soccer. For what it’s worth, because I had a stake in the game, it was kinda exciting. I mean, what would I have done if the Netherlands won? Heineken on the grill? Tulips? I’m already out of ideas. Fortunately, Spain won.

So…expect vegetarian paella (which is traditionally cooked outdoors) and sangria. I’ll set up the soccer goals for the kids and pull out the vuvuzela app on my phone.

RSVP in the comments section, and tell what you can bring.

USA! USA!

July 2nd, 2010

After two weeks off, the Global BBQ is back. Admittedly, Wednesday won’t feel all that global, seeing as we’re grilling American style in honor of the Fourth. Not to worry, the following Wednesday will honor the World Cup winner, so we know it won’t be a repeat.

Anyway, we’ll be providing hamburgers, hot dogs, and homemade veggie burgers (as well as all the condiments). American foods are a little easier to think of than those from most of the countries in the quarter finals of the Cup. RSVP in the comment section and we’ll see you on the seventh.

:(

June 22nd, 2010

Unfortunately, nobody can make it tomorrow, so the barbecue is canceled. South Africa will be postponed till later in the summer. On the bright side, I’ll have more time to locate a source for zebra meat (just kidding). I hope to see you on Saturday for Nathan’s birthday party.

Next Wednesday, Jamie will be in Vegas gambling our savings away, and the boys and I will be up north, so that bbq will be postponed as well. The following Wednesday is the 7th. Given the proximity to the 4th, I’ll be grilling American style.

Get your vuvuzelas!

June 19th, 2010

In honor of the World Cup, this Wednesday’s barbecue will feature the foods of South Africa.  If anyone knows where to find crocodile, impala, or springbok, we’ll be having that.  Otherwise, I’m thinking grilled pork kebabs with monkey gland sauce (don’t worry, no glands are actually being used) with two different kinds of roosterbrood (one being a vegetarian sandwich).

Good luck thinking of South African items to bring!
